Nautical Term: Twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU)
Definition of Twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU)
The Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) is a standard measurement used in containerized maritime cargo transport. Twenty feet represents the size of a single standard shipping container. Container vessel capacity and port throughput capacity are frequently measured and reported in TEUs. For instance, ‘A container vessel with a capacity of 8,000 TEUs has just docked at the port. The port’s throughput capacity is now 12,000 TEUs.’
