Nautical Term: Zinc primer
Definition of Zinc primer
A type of corrosion-inhibiting primer that is commonly used to coat bare steel surfaces prior to the application of subsequent paint coatings. The zinc primer acts as a sacrificial coating, protecting the underlying steel from corrosion.
For example: Before assembling the new hull of the sailboat, the builder applied a coat of zinc primer to the bare steel surfaces. Once the zinc primer had dried, the builder sanded the surface and applied an epoxy primer, followed by several coats of topcoat paint to give the sailboat a beautiful and protective finish.
